What's Nico Live?

Nico Live is a live streaming internet service where users can watch and broadcast
live programs and post and view comments all in real time.

Types of Broadcasts
Some official broadcasts and channel broadcasts must be purchased with
Nico Points in order to watch them.

・User broadcasts: Broadcasts by Niconico users
・Channel broadcasts: Broadcasts from channels

Broadcasters are asked to use a connection allowing steady uploads of 1 Mbps.

Check that the below ports are open and not blocked by security software and/or firewalls.

If these ports are blocked, follow the required procedures to release the TCP.

How do I register an account?

Follow the steps below to register an account.

Note that a confirmation email will not be sent once your account is registered.

(1) Choose free membership or premium membership from the New Member
Registration
page

(2) Enter an email address you want to register
・Mobile/smartphone email addresses are also supported.
・Set your email client settings to accept email from the domain "@nicovideo.jp".

(3) Open the notification mail sent to the email address you entered and click the provided URL

(4) Enter your nickname, sex, date of birth, prefecture, password and secret question/answer
・Please keep in mind that your sex and date of birth cannot be changed later.

(5) Confirm your details, enter the provided authorization code and agree to the Terms of Use

(6) Free Membership
After you see the account registry complete screen, log in to Niconico with your registered
email address and password.

(7) (Paid) Premium Membership
Register for premium membership by proceeding to the payment option screen.
・Your membership status will remain a free member until this registration is complete.

Why can't I watch broadcasts in high quality?

Since high quality broadcast streaming can put strain on your computer's CPU,
you may not be able to watch high quality broadcasts depending on your computer
specifications.

Please try the following streaming checks to determine if your computer supports
high quality streaming:

Does it cost money to use Nico Live?

Anyone who has a free member account can use Niconico free of charge.

You will be charged for upgrading an account to Premium Membership,
subscribing to paid channels, or purchasing Nico Points.

What are Nico Points?

Nico Points can be used to purchase features such as viewing
privileges for paid broadcasts and videos, Nico App items
and so forth.

1 point is equivalent to 1 yen and can be purchased with several
payment options.

* Nico Points are only available for purchase and use in
Japan or internationally for special events and/or promotions.

How do I search on Niconico?

Portions of the site that can be searched for content are the Niconico
home page, services pages, and services.

Multiple Keyword Search
Performing a search with spaces between keywords will search for
entries containing each of those keywords.

Excluded Keyword Search
Type a minus right before (no spaces) any keywords you want to exclude from your search.
i.e., "Cooking -Eggs" (Searching for cooking excluding eggs)

Keyword Search (or)
Type "or" between keywords will search for content only containing one of the keywords.


i.e., "Soysauce or sugar"

Customized Search
Entering search conditions within a parenthesis "()" allows you to refine your searches even further.
Be sure to include a space before and after the parenthesis.

i.e., "Cooking ( Eggs or poultry )" (Cooking search containing "eggs" or "chicken")

Time Search (live broadcasts only)
Enter a time within square brackets "[]" to search for any live broadcasts corresponding to that time.

i.e., "Cooking [2011/1130T12:00, 2011/12/1T11:00]"
(Search for cooking related programs broadcast from November 30, 2011 at 12pm until
December 1st, 2011 at 11am)

What are search options for videos/broadcasts?

Clicking the Search Option button on the search results page
allows you to narrow down search results even more.

Niconico Video
Specify the upload date and duration for videos. This feature is
for premium members only.
Further, only keyword searches are available.

Nico Live
This feature is available to users regardless of membership status.

You can specify whether to display programs without timeshifts or
communities with the same programs in search results.
These settings (excluding broadcast date settings) are stored as
cookies on your browser.

・Timeshifts
Putting a check in the option Hide programs with no timeshift
will exclude timeshifts for programs that have ended from search
results.

・Programs with the same community
Putting a check in the option Hide identical communities
will exclude identical communities from search results.

・Community programs
Putting a check in the option Hide community programs will exclude
community and channel-only programs from search results.

・Broadcast date
Specify by broadcast date. Programs already in session are not included
in search results.

What are Nico Live tags?

Adding Nico Live tags to a program links that program with
others that feature identical content. These linked tags can
then be used to narrow down or make searches.

Tag Features
・Up to 18 characters per tag
・Up to 10 tags per program

Tag Broadcaster Privileges
・Broadcasters can lock tags they don't want edited by viewers.
・Broadcasters can define which tags can be edited by viewers.

Programs are automatically assigned tags based on categories
and subcategories chosen by a broadcaster that cannot be
edited or deleted.

Tag Viewer Privileges
Tags for a program are displayed above the Nico Live player.
Clicking "Edit" makes an entry field appear where new tags can be added
and this also enables deleting of tags. The "Lock" button also appears
here for broadcasters.

What's Nico Farre?

Nico Farre is a next-gen live house and venue for many different events.
You can even hold your very own events there for a fee!

・Events are available to watch compliments of Niconico or for a fee. See event pages for details.
・Events can be watched via the Nico Farre player.
・Special comments exclusive to Nico Farre broadcasts called "Neon Comments" are available for use.

What are Neon Comments?

Neon Comments are decorative comments that can be used in
Nico Farre broadcasts. These comments come in 6 colors: red,
pink, light blue, blue, yellow, and green.

Users can purchase them with Nico Points (30 comments for 300
points) or try them out for free a limited number of times. Trying out
comments is only available with certain broadcasts, so make sure
to check a broadcast's page for details.

Purchased Neon Comments are tied to a specific broadcast and
cannot be used on other broadcasts.

Note that sale packages may differ for each broadcast.

* Note that this feature is available in Japan only.

What's Nico Live Cruise?

Nico Live Cruise is a feature enabling random playback
of user-selected broadcasts and is especially recommended to
those who want to see many different types of broadcasts.

Nico Live Nico Pop-Up

The following items are displayed with Nico Pop-Up in the marquee area of the screen.

・Time signal
・Nico Pop-Up Games
・Nico Pop-Up Surveys

Excluding a portion of Pop-Up Surveys, commenting
(including admin commenting) is enabled during pop-ups.

Note that images are still broadcasted even during Nico Pop-Ups.

What's Nico Donation?

Nico Donation
Nico Donation is a charity established to provide funds to
victims of the great Touhoku earthquake that occurred on
March 3rd, 2011.

All proceeds go to groups and organizations specified in
each program.
Any charges for this service are paid by DWANGO Co.,Ltd.

Help! I can't log in on Safari with an old Mac OS!

The following issues arise if cookies are
not properly sent from your computer:

・Inability to login
・Inability to subscribe to channels / join communities

Please refrain from using a Mac OS not listed in the recommended
system settings for Niconico. Please use a different browser other
than Safari if you are unable to update your Mac OS.

How do I receive general notifications for live broadcasts below the header?

These notification can be enabled to appear on all
Nico Live pages to inform you with important updates.

Types of Alerts
・Critical bugs and bug fix alerts
・Unwatched timeshift alerts (Number / time remaining until expiration)
・Alerts for broadcasts currently in session
Broadcast extensions / added tags and Nico Ichiba goods /
community and channel info for users

Hiding Alerts
・Unwatched timeshift alerts
Access your Nico Live My Page and put a check
on "Hide alerts for unwatched timeshifts".

・Alerts during broadcasts
Put a check in "Hide alerts during broadcasts" in the
System tab on the right of the Nico Live Player.

Alerts not appearing
The header must be pinned in order for notifications to display properly.
Click the arrow on the upper right of the page and set it to "pin".

What are the regulations for bothering/disrupting other users?

Please refrain from actions that may bother or disrupt others.

Failure to comply with this may result in account suspension
as described in our Terms of Use.

How do I report trolling/defaming comments?

How to Report Disruptive Behavior

From the live broadcast trolling/interruption report thread on the
Comment Deletion Request Board, enter the details for your report
and submit it.

Action Taken

If material is deemed inappropriate, it will be subject to deletion or the
owner's account will be suspended as described in Niconico's Terms
of Use and Nico Live Guidelines.

Note that reporting something does not guarantee action will be taken.
Niconico will not reply to any inquiries regarding the results of actions
taken.

How do I report copyright violations / inappropriate material in programs?

How to Report a Violation

You can report a violation by clicking the
report violation link at the bottom portion of the media player. A
violation can be reported for a broadcast while it is in session
or during its timeshift.

Bear in mind that violation reports are disabled for public programs.

Action Taken

Reporting inappropriate material
If material is deemed inappropriate, it will be subject to deletion or the
owner's account will be suspended as described in Niconico's Terms
of Use and Nico Live Guidelines.

Note that reporting material does not guarantee action will be taken.
Niconico will not reply to any inquiries regarding the results of actions taken.

Right violation notices (rights holder only)
Appropriate action will be taken regarding any notices received from a valid
right holder and/or legal representative upon verification of the claimant.

In order to expedite the review process and provide the most adequate
service possible, anyone other than the right holder is asked to refrain
from issuing claims.

Why can't I successfully report a program?

If you are unable to send a report, it may be due to the following:
Please confirm the following and send again.

・You are not logged into Niconico
・You've already issued a report
・Comment character limit has been exceeded
・The program you are trying to report has already been stopped or has ended
・The page failed to load correctly
・Info for the program was not properly retrieved
・Info for the broadcaster or individual issuing the report was not properly received
・No response from the server
・A broadcaster is mistakenly trying to report him/herself

How do I report an offensive program tag?

How to Report an Offensive Tag
You can report a violation by clicking the report offensive tag link at
the bottom portion of the Nico Live player. A violation can be reported
for a broadcast while it is live or during its timeshift.
Bear in mind that violation reports are disabled for public programs.
